Bethel, CT - Old Heidelberg Restaurant

Voted "Best German Restaurant" in Fairfield County by the Fairfield Weekly!

Old Heidelberg brings authentic German cuisine to the northern reaches of Fairfield County. Volker and Dunja Klemm opened this gem last March, naming it after their hometown in Germany. Volker, a stay-at-home Dad, discovered his passion for food, wine and beer when he was unsuccessful at finding a job in engineering. He began catering neighbors' soirées and eventually the word began to spread. After many gratified "you have to open your own restaurant" exaltations, he bit the bullet and did it.

The gemuetlichkeit (cozy) feel of Old Heidelberg's rustic dining room is a perfect setting to feast on a home-cooked dish of tender Vienna veal.

People come here to get a connection to Germany,' said Volker, who imports all his ingredients from the motherland, including Riesling harvested in the Kiedricher Sandgrub region, Dunja's hometown. With a 30-plus selection of imported beers, they host wine and beer tastings, and the beer garden is open all summer with live music on the weekends. -- The Fairfield Weekly
