St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church
The only Catholic Church in the Diocese of Brooklyn/ Queens that has a regularly scheduled German mass every Sunday at 8:45 AM in the lower church. New Pastor: Msgr. Peter Zendzian.
(Former Pastor Msgr. Edward Scharfenberger, becomes the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Albany in April 2014)
Many of St. Matthias' parishioners are German-speaking or of German descent. The Church, founded in 1908, is well-endowed architecturally, most notably with the Franz Meier (Munich) windows installed in 1926. Recently, the NYC Landmarks Commission included the church into the Historical Landmark District.
St. Matthias is easily accessible from Manhattan by "M" train and is a short walk from either the Forest or Fairview Avenue Stations.
