Astoria German Playgroup

The Astoria German Playgroup was founded by Naomi Jakob with a handful of German-speaking parents in 2008. Since then, the membership of the meet-up has grown to over 110 families. Our purpose is to connect German-speaking parents in the New York Metro area who are interested in socializing with other families and teaching their kids German.

One third of our members reside in Manhattan. Approximately 50% of our families  reside in Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside or Woodside (all in Queens) or in nearby Greenpoint and Williamsburg (both in Brooklyn). The rest of our members live in Westchester or on Long Island.

Three kinds of parents constitute our membership:

a) Families with one German-speaking parent;

b) Families where both parents are native German speakers, for example expats;

c) Families with German roots or an interest in the German language who don't speak German at all but want their kids to learn German.

Our "Fun German Kids" group meets every Wednesday afternoon in a 2500 square foot loft that is equipped with toys such as a play kitchen, play tool bench, plastic cars, easels, basket ball hoop, and a large bouncy house. Kids are split by age group and engage in fun activities to expand their knowledge of German.

Our meet up's are fun, educational, and help parents and kids practice and expand their knowledge of the German language. Please feel free to drop me a note with ideas or feed-back at any time at
